This Checklist Can Help You During Your Next Apartment Tour

This Checklist Can Help You During Your Next Apartment Tour

If you need to find a new apartment, you may wonder what sorts of things to look for during the touring process. When you only have a short time to move, you have to decide quickly. However, you also need to make sure you can live with your choice and remain comfortable.

That is why having an apartment touring checklist is so important. Your checklist is somewhat unique to you, since you may have your own priorities. However, there are certain universally helpful issues to look for as you walk through.

Determine If The Complex is Secure

Security can be a major concern for many renters, especially if you intend to live alone. If you are viewing an apartment that is part of a larger complex, check the outdoor security measures. See if the area is well lit at night and if security cameras are installed. Also, make sure the doors into the building are secure and require keys or key cards to enter.

Do a General Safety Check

There are several safety features every apartment needs. If you have pets or small children, some of those features can be even more important. Check all areas of the apartment to make sure the necessary safety features are present. Then take the time to see if they are working properly.

These may include:

  • Door and window locks
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Smoke detectors
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Sprinklers

Check for Evidence of Pests Throughout

A major problem in American apartments, as well as single family homes, is pest infestation. If an apartment has pests, they can cause allergic reactions or spread diseases. Some pests may also destroy furniture, cabinets, or food containers.

Check for insects, rodent droppings, or evidence of chewing, especially near food and water sources, such as the kitchen and bathroom areas. Common apartment pests include:

  • Termites
  • Ants
  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Cockroaches
  • Bed bugs

Check the Kitchen Thoroughly

You may want to focus a large portion of your apartment tour on the kitchen. Make sure it is a large enough space in which to cook. See if it has a pantry, or at least enough storage cabinets for foods. Make sure the appliances are functioning properly. Also, check the water pressure to make sure it is adequate. That way, you can cook more easily and comfortably.

Pay Careful Attention to Plumbing Issues in the Bathroom

Bathroom plumbing issues are common in apartments. One of those problems is a leaky faucet, which can waste a lot of water and increase your water bill. You may also notice problems with water temperature or pressure in the sink, tub, or shower. If so, make sure those issues are corrected before you move in. Mold or other more pressing plumbing problems may indicate the apartment is a bad choice for you.

Check the Electrical Setup

A final consideration is the electrical setup in the apartment. Make sure there are enough outlets in areas that are easy to access. Test switches to make sure they each work. Then, ask your landlord if you can inspect the circuit breaker. Make sure it is not too old and seems fully functional. Also, note whether it will be easy or difficult to access if the power goes out.
